Sorry, I didn´t make myself clear.

"With Roberts it is more the Mafia concept of Family". Refers to his biological family.

Up to now I'am not sure about the relationship between Brant and Roberts. Could be that in the later books there evolved more than what is apparent in the first three books of the series.

In the most recent Brant novel, Ammunition, Brant is shot, and a nurse or someone else at the hospital asks his colleague's if Brant had any family. "We are his family," Roberts (think it was Roberts, at least) answers, harshly.

So it's not just the Mafia concept of family. It's more that the characters seek substitutes for their real families, and not just for reasons of violence and protection.

Yes, I agree. Family is not a value for (as far as I know) most of Bruens protagonists. With Roberts it is more the Mafia concept of Family. (Meaning: "If anyone fucks my family it's me")

And thanks for the advice on Bill James. I'll check him out.

"Familie ist Familie"

One of the interesting aspects of the Brant and Roberts books is that the police have only each other as families. Bruen emphasizes this over and over in all seven of the books. In one, Porter Nash rejects his harsh, racist father in favor of his friendship with Falls and Brant.

Another writer on the porous borders between good and evil among police, though very sifferent from Ken Bruen, is Bill James.
